INDIGO TEMPLE " Neela"
For me, Parmeet Kaur, indigo represents more than just a dye; it’s a profound connection to my heritage and a symbol of timeless beauty. Growing up, I was surrounded by indigo-dyed fabrics crafted by my grandmother, a skilled weaver who taught me that indigo signifies both the spiritual and the eternal. This belief continues to inspire my work today.
At my Indigo Temple in Cognac, I honour this legacy by working with Polygonum tinctorium (Japanese indigo) and Indigofera tinctoria (Indian indigo). I grow both varieties in my garden, exploring their unique qualities and refining my techniques. The local water in Cognac, rich in alkalinity, is essential for maintaining the vitality of the dye vats.
The Blue Goddess "Neela", In my Indigo Dye Temple, the process of maintaining a fermented indigo vat is both an art and a science. The vat is alive, responding to the changing weather and shifting seasons, making each dyeing session a unique experience. This cyclic relationship requires constant care, attention, and adaptation.
My ongoing research focuses on deepening this connection, using local resources to nurture the vat and enhance the indigo dye. The interactions between the indigo, the environment, and my own practices are a reflection of my relationship with the Indian cultural and natural landscape.
