BLUE FUTURES — SITE-RESPONSIVE INDIGO ARCHITECTURE

Part of Blue Futures: Reimagining Indigo
Hampi Art Labs,
JSW Foundation | 2025

This indigo wall installation was commissioned by Hampi Art Labs as part of the exhibition Blue Futures: Reimagining Indigo.

The work approaches indigo not as surface decoration, but as architecture — a spatial field shaped by fermentation, climate, and material intelligence

The work functions as both architectural skin and ecological document — recording time, temperature, and labour within its surface.

Exhibition Framework

Blue Futures: Reimagining Indigo, explored indigo beyond textile — as a material shaped by cultivation, labour, spirituality, and global exchange.

The exhibition brought together artists from India, Japan, and West Africa, foregrounding fermentation practices and ecological continuity.

The indigo wall functioned as the spatial threshold of this inquiry.

Architectural Context

The exhibition space incorporated curved, vernacular-inspired forms. The indigo surface was developed to move with these contours, absorbing light across curvature and texture. Rather than acting as a backdrop, the wall became atmosphere.

Climate-Responsive Surface

Indigo was prepared using locally available plant sugars and alkaline materials, adjusting the vat to regional ecology.

The final surface records oxidation cycles, humidity, temperature, and drying time. The wall holds climate within its colour.

A semi-fermented, plant-reduced preparation incorporating local alkaline materials was applied layer by layer, allowing oxidation between applications.

Beeswax enriched and sealed the surface. The colour emerged through climate, time, and environment

Acknowledgement

With deep appreciation to Hampi Art Labs and JSW Foundation.Officially acknowledged in the exhibition catalogue for the development of the indigo surface.
