Indigo Vat — Fermentation & Reduction

A two -day workshop on building and maintaining a natural indigo vat while adapting it to local climate conditions.

Indigo is approached as a living system, where colour emerges through fermentation and reduction.
The vat becomes both medium and knowledge, shaped by time, balance, and observation.

Process

Participants engage with a natural indigo reduction vat, learning to observe and maintain its balance.Through preparation, immersion, and oxidation, the relationship between fibre, air, and time becomes visible. The process unfolds gradually, requiring attention and sensitivity to change.

Each sample reflects the interaction between material, dye, and environment.

Preparation of cotton, immersion, oxidation, and final rinsing are explored as interconnected stages, shaping both colour and material behaviour.
